Guide to Purchase and View ePublications

ePublications (ePubs or eBooks) can either be purchased at the PCI Online Bookstore (www.pci.org) or at the PCI fulfilment site (www.pci.org/epubs). Pricing for both PCI members and non-members purchases can be found at the PCI Online Bookstore while the PCI fulfillment site reflects non-member or retail pricing of the publications. The use of promotional codes at the PCI fulfillment site allows for discounted pricing off of the retail pricing. Please note that some publications are available for purchase as an eBook or a hard copy, both eBook and hard copy, or the hard copy is only available with the purchase of the eBook.

These instructions will address procedures associated with downloading and troubleshooting electronic books (ePubs) that are based on Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). You must have ADE (version 2.0 or higher) loaded on your machine in order to read the ePublications. It is very important that you register creating an Adobe ID and password as that Adobe ID is linked to these ePublications and is essential to you being able to open the ePublications on your devices. Detailed instructions or information pertaining to ADE registration can be found beginning with Item 10 below and in the ADE Troubleshooting Guide, Items 21 through 28.

  1. Open Internet Explorer and in the address bar, type in www.pci.org/epubs and it will take you to our fulfillment site.
  2. Click on the Register/Sign button. You should now be on the "Sign In" Page and you will have two choices.

    1. If you have already registered with the PCI fulfillment site, enter your information in the "Sign In" area and click on the "Login" button. You will then be taken back to the landing page for the PCI fulfillment site as illustrated above and you will be logged in. Please note that this registration is different than the PCI Online Bookstore registration. Having a log in and password on the PCI Online Bookstore does not automatically register you on the PCI fulfillment site. This is a separate registration and you are not required to use the same log in and password as you did on the PCI Online Bookstore.
    2. If you have not registered, put your email address in "Register" section and hit "Continue". Fill out the "Personal Information" and click on the "Register" button. You will then be taken back to the landing page of the fulfillment site and you will be logged in. If you used this option and you are downloading a previously purchased book on to another device, go to step 6.
  3. Click on either the "Buy" or "Hardcopy" button for the book you wish to purchase. From either of these, you can purchase the ePub only, the hard copy (if applicable), or both the ePub and hard copy.
  4. If you have a promotion code, enter the 16 digit code and select the Apply Promotion button. Then, click on the "Check Out" button.
  5. Complete the billing and the Credit Card Information. Read the "Terms and Conditions" and put a check in the "I agree with the above terms and conditions" check box. The billing information provided must match the name and address for the credit card. If it does not, the purchase will not be authorized.
  6. From the order receipt, select the Download Now button and proceed to step 9 or from the landing page, click on the "My Books" tab.
  7. In the "My Book" section, click on "Downloads"
  8. Click on the button for "Select for Download" next to the book you just purchased.
  9. You are now on the "Download Instructions" Page. Select the platform of the device you are trying to install the book on.
  10. If you do not have Adobe Digital Reader (ADE) on your computer (this is required to view the books), you will need to click on the "Download ADE" button. You will be redirected to the Adobe Digital Editions page. NOTE: You must have administrative rights to your computer in order to install ADE on your computer. If you don’t, you will need to contact your Network Administrator and have him/her give you temporary administrative rights so that it can be installed under your "User" profile. Once it is installed, administrative rights can be removed. If an administrator installs your ADE software, be sure they use the email address that matches the email address used on the PCI fulfillment site.
  11. On the Adobe Digital Editions Page, select the appropriate download – Macintosh or Windows and follow the instructions.
  12. Once the ADE install is completed, the ADE application will open to a Setup Assistant page. Click on continue.
  13. The Adobe ID is a unique ID that you MUST use to download and view the books on up to six devices. It is VERY important to not lose this ID. Think of it as the same as an Apple ID™ or a logon to a Facebook™ account where your personal information is stored and your data is accessible for you anywhere you use it. In this case, on up to six devices. If you get a new machine or perhaps have to have your current machine "re-loaded", you will need this to download and install books you have purchased to your new or repaired machine. ADE will prompt you for your Adobe ID and password to download the book. Without this, ADE will not download and open your purchased book. If you already have an Adobe ID for other Adobe products such as Adobe Creative Cloud, use that ID. Multiple Adobe accounts can cause issues and several hours to get corrected!!! Adobe seriously advises not to have more than one account!!! Please refer to the troubleshooting guide in the second section with issues regarding the Adobe ID and other troubleshooting with ADE.
  14. You will now be asked to "Authorize Computer". To do this you will need your Adobe ID. If you have one, enter your Adobe ID (email address) and password. If you do not, click on "get an Adobe ID online" which will take you to the Adobe site to request an Adobe ID. Once you have created your Adobe ID, return to ADE on your computer and enter your Adobe ID (email address) and Password. Then click on the "Activate" button. When the next screen pops up, click on finished. ADE is now ready for use.
  15. Go back to Internet explorer and the PCI.org page that you had opened. Now, click on the "Download Item" button.
  16. You will then be prompted by Internet Explorer (IE), either at the top of the screen or the bottom of the screen (depends on the version of IE you are running) to Open or Save a file. Click on "Open". NOTE: If you click on "Save", the book will not download properly. ADE will open and the download will begin. Download time will vary based on your internet speed and which book you are downloading (could take 5 minutes or more).
  17. The book will download in to your ADE library. Once the download is complete, the book will automatically open.
  18. NOTE: If you see the message below, Click on "Cancel" and continue to step 19. If you don’t, you are finished!
  19. Close ADE. Open your "Documents" folder or "My Documents" folder. Find your "My Digital Editions" folder and open it and then open the "restore" folder and then the "failed" folder. Delete anything in that folder. Close your document folder.
  20. Open ADE. It should now open without that message and you will have access to the book you downloaded.

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) Troubleshooting Guide

  1. What is Adobe Digital Editions?

Adobe Digital Editions or ADE is software for storing and viewing electronic books. Adobe Digital Editions is different than Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.

The books or "eBooks" do not work or have anything to do with the traditional .PDF format that most users are accustomed to with Adobe products (Reader/Acrobat). You can view PDF files with ADE but you cannot view "eBook’s" with any other Adobe software but ADE.

  2. Why is an Adobe ID important with ADE?

This is a unique ID for your Adobe account that you MUST use to download and view the books on up to six devices.

Do not check the box "I want to authorize my computer without an ID"!!! It is much easier, but this will prevent you from being able to download the book to other devices or re-downloading it again if your machine has to be formatted or re-built in the future.

If you have your correct Adobe ID and password, the process is very simple and your "eBook" will download and you can begin using the resource.

Now that you have the book downloaded with an Adobe ID, you can install it on five more devices such as tablets and phones. Once the device has been registered with your Adobe ID, you can re-install ADE and download your "eBooks" to the device.

  3. How do I deactivate my device if I get a new computer?

If you get a new computer or do not need to use ADE on a device anymore, it is good practice to DE-Authorize the device so you can still have access to the six uses of the book. The first thing you do is make sure you have the library view. Then click the help tab at the top right of the window.

After that click on "Erase Authorization"

You can also press CTRL+SHIFT+D within ADE and it will bring up the Erase Computer Authorization window.

  4. I have the "Epub" on my computer, but I get "Authorization Needed" when I try to read it?

This can happen if you have gotten a new computer and transferred your books to it, or your computer has been formatted and rebuilt.

This is where having your Adobe ID is critical to regain access to your purchased books. If you forgot your Adobe ID, password, or do not have access to the email you set your ID up with go to this URL and follow the directions.

This will walk you through everything you need to get your Adobe ID, Email address, or Password corrected.

If you have more than one "Epub" account from another vendor such as a public library you can sync the accounts so you can view all of your books from the same devices.

  5. Do I need to DE-Authorize my device before upgrading to a newer version of ADE?

No, you do not need to De-Authorize your device before you upgrade to a newer version of ADE. It will work correctly when you upgrade and you do not have to take any extra steps.

  6. Why when I try to install ADE I get "Access Denied" or "You do not have permissions" dialog box?

This is common in Windows bases networks especially with government and corporate networks. They have network policies that will not allow you to add/install software to the machine. This prevents many problems from occurring for users that may install software with malicious content such as malware, adware, and many other reasons. There are two ways to fix this and both require a Network Administrator to assist you with. The Administrator can either install ADE for you or give you "Local" Administrator rights to your machine that will allow you to install software. If your company uses a helpdesk a simple call to the desk and a remote session to install the software for you is usually very quick and easy.

  7. What do I do if I get an error when running the new version of ADE?

The most common reason this happens is if you have an older version of ADE installed on your machine. The way to fix this is uninstall the older version of ADE from Add/Remove programs. Then reboot your machine and install ADE 4.0. The link below will show you how to do this and also provide other troubleshooting tips from Adobe with ADE installations. If your issues cannot be resolved by these steps, contact your help desk or Network Administrator.

  8. What if I get the error message below when I attempt to download from My Downloads or make a new purchase from the PCI fulfillment site? It is likely that the .ACSM file association with ADE is broken in your device. To recreate this file association, follow the steps below.

Please choose the option "Select a program from a list of installed programs.

    Select Browse… button

Navigate to Adobe Digital Editions folder, select "DigitalEditions" file, and select Open button.
